What to Do If You Find a Leak?
If you discover a leak in your home, the worst thing you can do is ignore it. Even a small drip left alone for a day can waste a stunning amount of water, not to mention cause extensive water damage. However, most people have never had a leak and don't know what to do first.
Contain the Leak
This can be as simple as turning off the water to the area. However, if the leak is in an area that requires turning off the water at the main line, you may just want to put a bucket under it. If the leak is particularly dramatic, as in, more than just a drip, you will want to shut the water off any way you can.
Assess the Situation
If you have water gushing in the middle of the night, you may want to call emergency service. However, a small drip or a leak in an area you can shut off the water to can wait until normal business hours. Be aware that emergency service will cost quite a bit more so if you can wait, you should wait.
Call For Service
No matter how intrepid a do-it-yourselfer you think you are, plumbing is complicated and requires a practiced hand. You can be sure that the repair will require more than just a piece of duct tape in order to permanently fix. Furthermore, a professional plumber will see it fixed up quickly.
In some cases, your plumber will fix the leak, but will tell you of issues that caused the leak in the first place. This could be caused by older plumbing that is at the end of its life cycle or more easily repaired issues such as too high of water pressure in the home. Regardless, you need to not only repair the leak, but the issue that caused it as well.
