What Does The MERV Rating on Your Air Conditioner Air Filter Mean?
To some, an air filter is an air filter. However, if you are shopping for a replacement air filter, you will find that there are actually quite a few options you can choose from. One of the most notable differences is the MERV rating, but what does it mean?
MERV, or Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value, is a scale that measures the smallest particle it can efficiently block. Typically, the scale ranges from 1 to 16, with 1 being the lowest. You may also find filters with higher numbers, but these are typically not used in residential homes.
Unexpectedly to most homeowners, the filter is there to actually protect the inner workings of your air conditioner system. It filters the air being taken in so debris or particles don't get into the unit. However, a nice byproduct is cleaner air going into your home.
For most homes, try and choose a filter with a MERV rating of between 7 to 13. The higher you go, the more it will filter out. Some MERV filters can even keep harmful bacteria out of the home. However, mostly, an air filter in this range will be both affordable and filter out the items you want kept out like mold, smoke, and excess dust.
While you may be tempted to buy a very high MERV-rated filter, you should be aware that the denser material it uses could restrict airflow in your system. This could decrease appliance efficiency and end up raising your energy bills. It is best to consult with our team to determine how high of a MERV rating your system can handle.
