Do I Need a Permit to Replace My Furnace?

Getting your furnace replaced typically follows the same process every time.

The first step you want to do is to find a reputable furnace technician or company (just like A R Engh). A quick google search will help you find companies in your area. However, it’s important to do a little more research than simply clicking the first result on the Google page.

Ask family and friends for recommendations and look into the companies you’re considering. Are there reviews available? Ratings you can look up? These are all important things to consider when choosing a company.

You can request an estimate from the companies you are considering to help you make a more informed decision. While it isn’t necessarily the best choice to simply go with the cheapest option, it is helpful to have a better idea of what each company expects replacing your furnace to cost.

Once you’ve chosen the company you’re going to work with, the company will want to come to your house to do a furnace consultation. This is where the company will get a better idea of your needs, what kind of furnace will work best for you, and any additional installation needs for your space.

After the consultation, your company will provide you with a specific estimate for the work, which you will get a chance to look over and sign.

After all the paperwork has been completed, you and the company come to an agreement on what day works best for each of you to complete the installation.

On installation day, the furnace technician will review all the details to make sure you are getting the correct furnace and everything is as it should be. The areas around the furnace (and areas to and from where the furnace is being installed) should be cleared so the technicians have room to work and move as they need to while completing the installation.

Once things have been double-checked, the technician will get to work while you get to relax.

When the technician is finished with the installation, they will inspect and test the furnace to make sure everything is hooked up and working properly. They will also go over how to use your new system. This is the perfect time to ask any questions you may have and make sure you understand your new system.

As we have discussed in previous blogs (such as “My Furnace Only Lasts HOW Long?”), regular maintenance is going to be the key to keeping your furnace in top condition for as long as possible. This means scheduling regular maintenance and replacing the filter according to the schedule for your unit.

But what about that permit?

The most common thing most people forget about installing a furnace is obtaining a permit for this work. While it may seem odd to need a permit to do something in your own house, there are necessary steps every city requires to keep the area safe.

Each city is different when it comes to its permit requirements, so it’s important to check with your specific city. Almost all cities have their requirements posted on their websites, such as Minneapolis, St. Paul, and Cokato.

Don’t let the idea of permits and government agencies scare you.

That’s the beauty of working with the professionals at A R Engh; we don’t let these steps get over looked.

When working with A R Engh, we are involved every step of the way to ensure your furnace is installed safely, correctly, and up to your city’s required code.
