5 Signs that Your Water Heater Needs Repair or Replacement
Water heaters provide the convenience of having hot water ready on demand. Most models are long-lasting. Therefore, most homeowners do not get them inspected regularly. They only notice the worsening condition when it is too late. To avoid a situation where you do not have hot water, here are some signs you can check to know if you need to have your water heater repaired or replaced.
1. Water Leaking from the Bottom of the Tank
If the water tank rusts, it may develop holes at the bottom, which may leak water. You may not notice small holes, but you may find the area around the water heater moist or drops of water on the floor. Leakage can increase the risk of mold growth and damage to surfaces around the heater. Have leaks repaired as soon as possible to avoid costly repairs.
Small leaks can be repaired successfully by patching them. However, if the tank has multiple holes, it may need to be replaced as soon as possible. If rust is the reason for the holes, you may also notice sediments or brown water from the faucets.
2. Inconsistent Water Temperature
The first problem you will notice when the water heater starts to malfunction is the water temperature fluctuation. This will continue to change even when there are no changes in the temperature settings of the appliance.
The temperature difference occurs due to the accumulation of mineral deposits around the heating surfaces of the water heater. This causes it to heat water at different temperatures in different sections. Getting water at a specific temperature for your home activities may be hard for you.
3. Running Out of Hot Water Quickly
Water heaters have tanks with specific capacities that allow them to provide for a given period. They also have two heaters, one at the top and another at the bottom, to keep the water hot. If you do not get hot water after a short period, it may mean that one of the heaters is not working correctly.
Some of the heaters with the problem start releasing cold water after a short period. Others will start producing lukewarm water until you shut the faucets and wait for the water in the tank to get hot again. It may cause you to have little hot water for your household duties.
4. Strange Noises from the Water Heater
Water heaters usually hum when working. The noise is not strange or loud enough to disturb your peace. However, if the heater starts to make loud noises, there could be a problem that needs immediate attention.
Sometimes, the noises come from sediments hitting the walls as the water currents cycle. They can be removed by cleaning the tank periodically. Other cases come from rust particles that hit the heating elements. Rusted tanks can only be replaced.
5. The Age of the Water Heater
Most water heaters are designed to last between 10 and 15 years, depending on the make and maintenance. After this period, the heaters usually become inefficient and are likely to break down more often. If you use an electric heater, you may notice your bills going up. On the other hand, the gas water heaters get sooty, meaning they are not burning the gas as required.
Sooty water heaters can be a sign of carbon monoxide poisoning, as the gas is not mixing with air properly for complete burning. An inspection should confirm the status of the water heater.
